Smederevo Fortress

Built in the capital city, the fortress was a stronghold against invaders. The Small Town section with Despot Djuradj’s residence was built in just two years and, later, a significantly larger part was built – Veliki grad (The Big Town), with military camps and a civilian population. Nineteen towers with ramparts were additionally built, and a trench was dug to connect the Danube and the Jezava rivers.
